Our fair legislators

Democrats, who control the Legislature, have crafted a plan that would force six Republican incumbents into three
districts in the Birmingham area. This means, of course, at least three of the six would lose their seats.
The Democrats also stuck it to one of their own: State Rep. Frank "Skippy" White, at home recovering
from serious health problems, learned his party had lumped him in a new district with a Republican colleague. (Lesson
for the day: Don't turn your back on these guys.)
What's interesting is the response from legislators, who unashamedly believe that self-protection is the chief
goal in drawing new districts after each census count. In their minds, putting two incumbent legislators into one
district just ruins everything.
It's just too bad that the Legislature never showed the same sense of urgency and direction about the real troubles
that face our state.
